Book Your Southend to Stansted Transfer

Airportbee runs fixed-price, licensed transfers between Southend and Stansted, with your driver tracking your inbound flight so pickup happens when you actually land. Both airports sit in Essex, which makes this one of the shorter, easier journeys in Airportbee’s network — a contrast to some of the longer routes elsewhere in the region.

Quick facts

  • Distance: around 29 miles direct; the road route via the A130 or A127/M11 is typically 37–39 miles
  • Typical journey time: 50–65 minutes in normal traffic
  • No M25 or central London needed — the drive stays within Essex throughout
  • A genuine direct bus exists (the X30 Essex Airlink), but it’s slow — realistically 90 minutes to 2 hours due to its local stopping pattern
  • Pickup: Southend Airport terminal (single terminal, with its own onsite railway station)
  • Drop-off: Stansted Airport terminal (single terminal)

One of the Shorter, Easier Drives in Airportbee’s Network

Southend and Stansted are both Essex airports, and the drive between them doesn’t touch the M25 or go anywhere near central London — it’s a genuinely direct cross-county journey. By road, they’re around 29 miles apart direct, or 37–39 miles by the practical route, with a typical journey time of 50–65 minutes in normal traffic. It’s one of the more straightforward routes Airportbee covers.

The X30 Bus Is Real and Direct — It’s Just Not Fast

There’s a genuine, direct public bus between these two airports, and it’s worth knowing about before you book anything: the X30 Essex Airlink, run by First Bus, connects Southend and Stansted via Chelmsford, running roughly hourly through most of the day and operating close to 24 hours. It’s also cheap — fares have been advertised at a flat £3 per journey (worth checking the current price before you travel).

What it isn’t is quick. Because the X30 is a genuine local bus route with dozens of stops along the way — not an express airport shuttle — the full journey realistically takes anywhere from 90 minutes to around 2 hours, considerably longer than the 50–65 minute drive. It’s a perfectly reasonable option if you’re travelling light, have time to spare, and want the cheapest possible way to make the trip. It’s not the option if you’re on a tight connection or travelling with much luggage.

Why the Train Doesn’t Help Either

There’s no direct train between Southend and Stansted. Both airports have good rail links into London — the Greater Anglia service from Southend Airport’s own onsite station, and the Stansted Express — but travelling between them by train means going into London first and back out again, which typically takes close to two hours once the change is included. Given how short the drive is, this isn’t a shortcut.

Pickup at Southend

Southend has a single, compact terminal, so there’s no terminal choice to make. It also has its own onsite railway station, a two-minute walk from arrivals, with direct Greater Anglia services to London Liverpool Street — useful for onward travel into London, though as above, not a shortcut to Stansted. More detail is on the Southend Airport transfers guide.

Drop-off at Stansted

Stansted has a single terminal, so there’s no terminal choice to make at this end either. Two Meet & Greet options are available: a Zone D express pickup point (£7), or premium Meet & Greet where your driver waits inside arrivals with a name board (£15, parking included up to £10) — and as an express-pickup airport, you get 10 minutes of free waiting rather than the standard 5. See the full Stansted Airport transfers guide for more.

Connecting Between Separately Booked Flights

Because Southend and Stansted have no shared airline network, any same-day connection between separately booked flights is a self-transfer — clear immigration if arriving internationally, collect your baggage, then make the road journey before checking in again. Given how short this particular route is, the transfer itself eats less into your connection than on Airportbee’s longer routes, but it’s still worth checking your airline’s own guidance rather than assuming the short distance guarantees a comfortable connection.

If your inbound Southend flight runs late, flight monitoring means your driver adjusts to your actual landing time automatically, so a delay doesn’t mean a missed pickup.

Fixed Price, Confirmed Before You Travel

Airportbee runs fixed fares for every booking channel — phone, app, live chat, email or online — so the price you’re quoted is the price you pay, regardless of traffic on the day. Get your live fixed quote through the booking engine below.

Choosing Your Vehicle

A Saloon suits most solo and business travellers on this route. Families or anyone with more luggage should consider an Estate or 6-Seater; groups can use the 8-Seater. The Executive option is available for a more comfortable ride between the two Essex airports.
